Shin, who moved to Utah at age 10 and has been navigating the legal immigration process, has a citizenship application currently pending. 

His family and friends have expressed concern for his well-being, noting that he was only able to make a brief phone call following his detention. The specific reasons for his detention have not been disclosed, and attempts to reach ICE and the family's attorney for comment have not been successful.

I'm Carolina Hassett here at the University of Utah's College of Fine Arts, where alum John Shin played the violin, but after being detained by ICE this week, his loved ones who knew him through that instrument are working to bring him home. Shock and at the same time not surprising. This is the direction that our country has been headed in. Friends and family are reacting after Utah violinist John Shin was detained by ICE on Monday. His wife went to social media saying he only had a 30 second phone call to explain what was going on. We have not heard a single word from him since that phone call. Gabriel Gordon has known Shin for about 10 years and connected with him through the violin. It's been my honor and privilege to be his stand partner and as well as conduct him in ensembles. Shin plays at places like the Salt Lake Symphony, Utah Symphony and Ballet West. His former college professor Robert Baldwin says he was an eager student. He would get excited about the next piece we were going to play and go and research different recordings and come with ideas. Baldwin hopes contributions people make to society are taken into account in these situations. Not knowing anything about the situation of his immigration status, that is a very human aspect of what we're feeling right now. Why we feel the loss that someone like that, a musical collaborator, is no longer able to be here with us. Gordon says Shin came to Utah when he was 10 years old and has been working his way through the legal system on different visas ever since in that his citizenship paperwork is currently pending. That was three years ago. Generally it takes about five years for that paperwork to go through and he was just waiting. But many are worried for him, especially after hearing he was taken to a detention center in Colorado. John is a person who is very sensitive. I worry about his well-being. His family depends on him. He can't be there for them right now and I just feel like I have to do something about it. The reason Shin was detained remains unknown.
