The strike, now in its fifth week, has led to job action by over 16,000 union members, impacting services at provincial liquor stores, distribution warehouses, and government offices. The restaurant industry has expressed concern about potential layoffs if the dispute continues, urging both parties to reach a resolution to minimize disruptions.

Union members and supporters were marching in solidarity for the B.C. General Employees Union. We don't think they came with really a serious offer to bargain with and so as a result we're here today. We have thousands of B.C.G. members have walked off the job here in Vancouver to join a strike with their colleagues for fair wages. The escalating strike is now into its fifth week and the union says more than 16,000 of its members are now in some form of job action. Talks broke down shortly after they resumed negotiations earlier this week. The union with 34,000 public service workers is now asking for a wage increase of 8% in a two-year agreement. The province's most recent offer is a 5% increase over two years. It is a fair offer, it's a reasonable offer and we're trying hard to balance two things. One is that we hugely value the work done by the public service and the other is that the money is not there to go further than that. This is just the reality. It's fundamentally about the cost of living going up here and they're not going to balance this budget on the backs of civil servants. Several other unions were also walking hand-in-hand with the B.C.G.E.U. We are not backing down and it's time to come to the table to make a move so that we can get a deal and so we can get B.C. working again. And what is right is that we are able to provide food and shelter for our children and be able to have a better life. Picket lines have been up at one-third of provincial liquor stores at liquor and cannabis distribution warehouses and government offices around B.C. The restaurant industry says it's concerned that the job action could result in temporary staff layoffs. They're a week and a half to two weeks away from not being able to offer their full liquor menu service and that obviously impacts their operations which could cause them to shut down certain hours.
