Cookie lovers be warned, a new online scam is overcharging and under-delivering for a popular treat. Fraudsters have been posing as Girl Guides cookie sellers on community forums and tricking people into paying for the non-existent sweets.

Scammers are posting in community groups on social media, claiming their children are selling Girl Guide cookies, and requesting e-transfers upfront. These individuals are not affiliated with the Girl Guides organization and do not deliver the cookies after receiving payment. The organization emphasized the importance of their cookie sales for fundraising and encouraged supporters to remain vigilant. Cybersecurity experts advise buyers to only pay after receiving the cookies and to report any scams to help protect others.

We are obviously concerned about seeing examples like this out there in the wild but we hope that they don't discourage any of our supporters from supporting a really essential program for kids and youth and adults. Cookies are the Girl Guides of Canada's main fundraising tool helping raise money for programs, activities and camp fees. Scammers online today will do anything for a dishonest dollar. Cyber security experts say there are ways you can protect yourself. First, pay after delivery. So make arrangements, get the cookies dropped off by the parents and then once you physically have the goods, do the payment then and there.
