This international conference offers a rare chance for their voices to be heard by global stakeholders. But Fatima Khatun, now in her 70s, is not so sure of the conference's outcome. Like many others, she has fled Myanmar from the military crackdowns three times in 1978, 1992 and again in 2017. Widowed, she now raises two adopted children in Bangladesh, clinging only to the hope of returning home. I want to go home with justice, to get back my land and property. I want to see peace there. It's been eight years since I came here for the third time. How much longer must we suffer? The Rohingya, a persecuted Muslim ethnic minority from Myanmar, remain one of the world's most marginalized groups. Of the estimated 3.5 million Rohingya worldwide, nearly 90 percent live as refugees, undocumented migrants or stateless. In the past 18 months, Bangladesh has taken in another 150,000 Rohingya fleeing the conflict in Myanmar. But aid is running out. The UN warns, without urgent support, this lifeline for more than a million refugees may come to an end. The Bangladesh Refugee Relief and Repatriation Commissioner says the Rohingyas lacked a united voice for eight years, but recently organized and applied to form a civil society group through an election. I believe this is a unique arrangement by the Bangladesh government and so far since 1991, we did not do such kind of dialogue with the international stakeholders as well as with the Rohingya community. This is unique in nature. Kamal Hussain, an activist, says the Bangladesh government should talk directly with the Rohingyas to find a solution with other stakeholders. Since 2017, Rohingyas have had no direct dialogue with international bodies, the Bangladeshi government, local communities or Myanmar. This conference is seen as a step towards solutions. For the Rohingya, this is another chance to be had. For the people attending the conference, it is a test of whether their commitments will move beyond words to action.
