After months of veterinary attention and rehabilitation, the gorilla—now almost a year old and named Zeytin or Oliver—has recovered from his ordeal.

Plans are underway to return him to his natural habitat in Nigeria, but Turkish authorities are requesting assurances that he will not be subject to illegal trade again and will be placed in a suitable environment. Both Western and Eastern gorilla species, native to Central Africa, are currently classified as endangered.
