CNBC’s Phil LeBeau joins 'Money Movers' to discuss the shift in U.S. auto production, leading to increased shifts and overtime for auto workers.

U.S. automakers are increasing production by adding shifts and overtime, particularly for popular vehicle models, as a greater proportion of vehicles sold in the U.S. are now being built domestically. Recent data shows that the share of U.S.-built vehicles sold in the country has risen from 51% in the first quarter to 56% in the most recent month, with some production shifting from Mexico and Canada to the United States.

Despite these changes, consumer vehicle prices have remained relatively stable, with only modest increases compared to previous months and years. Ford has seen a notable rise in U.S. sales, while future production decisions by foreign automakers may depend on ongoing trade policy negotiations. No new plant commitments have been made yet, and any new facility would take at least three years to become operational.

Automakers adding shifts, overtime amid shift in U.S. production

Welcome back after months of auto tariffs. Has the industry seen some major production changes? Our Phil LeBeau is looking into that this morning and joins us now. Hey, Phil. Hey, Carl. I wouldn't call that major changes, but it's clear that the automakers, if they've had excess capacity here in the U.S., they've tried to use it or at least shift some production there. Look at these numbers from J.D. Power. In the first quarter, 51% of what was sold in the U.S. was built in the U.S. You saw it go up to 54 in April, a little bit more in May. Last month, 56% of the production here in the United States was for vehicles that were sold in the U.S. And we've talked about this for some time. We saw it with Ford. We saw it with GM. If they can add shifts or if they can add overtime, some of the more popular models, they're trying to increase that production as much as possible. In some cases, moving some production from Central or from Mexico or from Canada here to the United States. It depends on what the vehicle is and where the capacity is at. In terms of what the consumer is seeing out there, we really haven't seen prices increase a lot. In fact, the sales rate, while it has slowed down, is a little over $15.3 million in the month of June. The transaction price is only up about 2% compared to where it was in March, up about 1% year over year at just under $49,000. That's according to Cox Automotive. Finally, take a look at shares of Ford and Toyota. Ford has definitely seen an increase in U.S. sales. In Q2, they were up more than 14%. Look at the divergence in these stocks over the last couple of months. And I think that speaks to the questions about tariffs, Sarah, in terms of what's going to happen in terms of our final trade policy with Japan, for example, which is why we're showing you Toyota, or with Korea or with Europe. That will be a big determining factor in terms of these foreign automakers either further increasing their production in the U.S. or, in some cases, maybe opening up a plant for the first time. And again, that's going to play out over the next several months because, at this point, nobody has committed to actually adding a plant. And remind us again how long it takes once they do? Oh, minimum three years. I mean, that's really moving fast. All right. Thank you.
