Australia and Papua New Guinea have formalised a new defence treaty, marking the first such alliance for Australia in over 70 years. The pact includes mutual assistance in the event of war and allows PNG citizens to serve in the Australian Defence Force.

Australia and Papua New Guinea have signed the Pook Pook Defence Treaty, establishing a significant new alliance between the two nations. This is Australia's first new defence alliance in more than seven decades and only the third in its history. The treaty commits both countries to assist each other in the event of war and introduces a provision allowing PNG citizens who are Australian permanent residents to join the Australian Defence Force starting from the beginning of next year.

The agreement is seen as a strategic move amid growing Chinese influence in the Pacific region. Meanwhile, domestic political tensions continue within Australia's opposition, with internal disputes over responsibility for the recent election loss surfacing as Parliament prepares to reconvene.

This is one of Beijing's weaknesses. Beijing does intend to have a large degree of partnerships. While the government works to improve and strengthen relations on the world stage, the same can't be said about the Coalition. Tonight, reports ousted leader Peter Dutton told the Liberal Party review into the election loss that Andrew Hastie was primarily to blame for the party's thumping defeat. Sources telling the Sydney Morning Herald that our former Shadow Home Affairs Minister went on strike during the last term, who was absent, scared to do media or lazy. The reason we lost the election is not enough people voted for us. That's why we lost the election. I don't know how it found its way in the public domain, but this is the most important election review in the history of the Liberal Party in our 80 years. It's another unwanted distraction for the opposition as Parliament returns tomorrow.
