The storm made landfall with waves up to 26 feet high, causing extensive damage to homes, flooding thousands of acres of crops, and disrupting power supplies.

Authorities evacuated more than 28,500 people and closed four airports, leading to hundreds of flight cancellations or delays. The typhoon weakened as it moved into Laos, but its impact was described by locals as unprecedented in terms of wind strength. The storm had previously caused fatalities in the Philippines before reaching Vietnam.

Typhoon Boa Loi struck Vietnam on Monday, killing at least 8 people and leaving more than a dozen others missing. 17 fishermen were reported missing after giant waves hit two boats off Quang Tri province and another boat lost contact during the storm. Boa Loi reached Vietnam's coast early in the day, driving waves of up to 26 feet according to the National Weather Agency. The storm battered homes with heavy rain, huge waves and strong winds knocking out power before weakening. By 11 a.m. local time, it was crossing into Laos with winds down to about 46 miles per hour from about 73 miles per hour at landfall, according to the weather agency. Locals in the area said the wind was unlike anything they'd seen before. It was terrifying. In my 38 years of life, I haven't seen any storm with such powerful gusts of wind. I couldn't sleep because the sheet metal roof was shaken violently while my door was blown in. It was beyond my power of imagination. I have witnessed many, many storms, but in terms of wind power, this is the biggest one I have seen because of its gusting wind. According to the disaster agency, Boa Loi damaged 245 homes, flooded over 3,400 acres of crops and blocked access to several areas. Before the storm hit, authorities evacuated over 28,500 people and canceled or delayed hundreds of flights, closing four airports in central provinces. With its long South China Sea coastline, Vietnam is prone to typhoons born east of the Philippines, where at least 10 died after Boa Loi last week.
