Witnesses say it erased everything in its path. Dams collapsed around Wadi Derna and caused water to cascade into the city itself. Three bridges collapsed completely, and water spread inside the neighborhoods. And there are entire neighborhoods that moved to the sea. The destruction caused by Mediterranean storm Daniel. After devastating parts of Greece, Bulgaria and Turkey, Daniel pounded eastern Libya's coast Sunday night. I saw a man carried away by water who just passed my house. I don't know if he's hanging on to that car or if he's gone far away. A state of emergency has been announced, but it's slow and arduous work for rescue teams still waiting for the flooding to recede. Military crews have uncovered hundreds of bodies, and several aid workers have died. But the rival politics of post-war Libya makes this challenge even more difficult. The eastern Libyan regime, backed by Russia, is not internationally recognized. And its public service and hospital system have been weakened by years of conflict. These are hard and painful times. The number of affected people is very big. The damage is huge. It's hard to describe or measure it. The Tripoli-based National Unity Government says it will send all assistance possible to the east, and has requested international help. Italy, Egypt and Turkey among the nations already answering that call, sending aid and rescue teams.
