The San Diego International Airport welcomed the public for an exclusive preview of the brand-new Terminal 1, after years of construction.

Approximately 5,000 people attended a public sneak peek of the newly constructed Terminal 1 at San Diego International Airport. The terminal, which has been under development for about five years with construction beginning in November 2021, was opened to the public for a preview event ahead of its official launch.

Attendees experienced significant traffic congestion due to the large turnout but were able to explore the terminal's expanded spaces, modern amenities, and familiar local restaurants. Airport officials highlighted that the new terminal was designed to address previous crowding issues and enhance the overall customer experience. The official opening of Terminal 1 is scheduled for later in September.

It's been years in the making and now people were finally able to see what's been under wraps for so long. Crowds of people came to the San Diego International Airport, which also brought lines of cars, creating a big traffic jam. A. B. C. 10 News reporter Jane Kim got a firsthand look at what you can expect the next time you want to take off. It's been a long time coming, but terminal one is finally open for the public to see as thousands of faces are coming to the area to check out the space. Around 5000 people celebrating a project around five years in the making, getting a first look at the long awaited terminal one at San Diego International Airport. Work originally started back in November of 2021. Airplane enthusiast Daniel Hall was one of the many in the crowd admiring the improvements. I like planes a lot. I'm kind of a nerd. My mom was a flight attendant. So yeah, just as a kid, always loved traveling, you know, being in planes and airports and everything. So just wanted to come out and see what it's all about before my next flight in November. So I'll be back here again. Daniel isn't the only one excited for the new terminal. It has several design features and familiar restaurants that San Diegans might recognize. Luigi Diaz is a longtime San Diego resident and says seeing this project come together is great for locals. It's a sunday, it's brand new and I was really, really excited to see this because we San Diegans have been putting a lot of effort into building something like this and to see come to fruition is just like just awesome. Ultimately, officials at the airport say it's providing ample space for people traveling through the terminal in 2024. We had almost 10 million people travel to that airport. It was cramped and it did not offer some of the modern things that many airports offer. So in designing this terminal, we knew we needed to look at the customer experience and offer more space on our hold rooms, more seating, more restaurants for Daniel. He's excited to see the community enthusiastic for this new opening. It's just really cool seeing again, like it's very surprising seeing the entire community being this excited for this new terminal opening. And yeah, again, it's, it's a real cool to see everyone get together and come here and take a look at the, our, you know, newest addition to our airport.
