A recent study conducted by Arizona State University in collaboration with NASA has found that groundwater storage in Arizona is being depleted more rapidly than previously anticipated. Using satellite data from the GRACE mission, researchers tracked groundwater changes in the Colorado River Basin over more than two decades, revealing that the region has lost an amount of water equivalent to the storage capacity of Lake Mead, with 74% of this loss occurring in Arizona.

The study identifies drought and agricultural practices, particularly flood irrigation, as major contributors to the decline. However, some local farmers argue that on-the-ground data does not always match satellite findings and point to areas where groundwater levels have increased. The research team emphasizes that the problem is worsening, with groundwater loss in the last decade tripling compared to the previous one, and calls for improved water management strategies.

Much of our state relies on groundwater, but new research from ASU and NASA finds that our groundwater storage could be in trouble. Not everybody agrees, though, on how big of a problem this actually is. Steve Nielsen breaks it down for us. Well, the science here is really interesting. It's all about using data collected from space on how gravity impacts groundwater. But some of the farmers we spoke with said that the data on the ground doesn't match the data from space. For years, Fox 10's been going to K-Wood farms to see impacts of the drought firsthand. Before we ever put a new crop in, we go through and we prepare that field so they're as level as can be. That was three years ago. Today, Nancy K-Wood told us they continue to spend big money to make sure their flood irrigation doesn't waste water. Our fields are dead level from side to side, and there's a sly slope that runs from the irrigation ditch to the end of the field. But flood irrigation is listed as a big problem in new research by NASA and Arizona State University. It was surprising for us, actually, because we found that groundwater is being used up much faster than we are expecting. Scientist Karim Abdel-Massan says they use the satellite called GRACE to track groundwater in the Colorado River Basin for more than 20 years. It was a measurement of change in the gravity field. And this gravity has a sensitivity to any change in the water, in surface or subsurface. They found the basin has lost equal to the storage capacity of Lake Mead in the last 20 years. 74% of that loss is in Arizona. The biggest culprit, they say, is the drought. Could this all be solved if suddenly we have a few El Nino years? It can be solved, actually, but it can't be solved only natural. We have to do some other management strategy. Up next on their list of causes, the agriculture industry and flood irrigation. A lot of people think we're wasting water. People think that we're not recharging. And we are recharging. Kaywood points to other data in recent years that show some parts of Arizona with increasing groundwater levels. As farmers, we don't want to waste water. We think that farmers are the best stewards of the land. And that ASU-NASA research team says this problem is not slowing down. In fact, they found with their research that we lost three times the amount of groundwater in the last decade than the decade prior. Steve Nielsen, Fox 10 News.
