A wildfire known as the Dragon Bravo Fire has destroyed the historic Grand Canyon Lodge on the North Rim of Grand Canyon National Park and led to the closure of that section of the park. The fire has also damaged dozens of other structures in the area. Firefighters are contending with challenging conditions, including high temperatures, strong winds, and low humidity, as they work to contain the blaze. Another nearby fire, the White Sage fire, has grown rapidly and now covers more than 40,000 acres, prompting additional concerns for nearby communities and lodges. Authorities are focusing efforts on guiding the fires away from populated areas and toward less vulnerable terrain.

Fires burning near the Grand Canyon's northern rim forced park officials to close that area of the park for the season. Fire crews say the Dragon Bravo fire expanded to 5,000 acres and that burned down the historic Grand Canyon Lodge, destroying dozens of other structures as well. CBS News correspondent Ian Lee joins us from Fredonia, Arizona. This is near Utah's southern border, just miles from where the largest fire is still burning right now. Ian, good morning to you. Bring us up to date on the status of all these fires. Yeah, Errol, it's quite hot in here in northern Arizona, just behind me. I mean, you can't see it now, but when we were driving in yesterday, you could see huge plumes of black smoke from the White Sage fire. That's more than 40,000 acres. That one is just running away. It grew more than 20 times over the course of five days. That is fueled by hot weather, winds and low humidity. And I can tell you when the sun comes up, it's expected to be close to 100 degrees today. Another horrible day for firefighters. Talking to the incident command post, they said there are hundreds of firefighters on this fire trying to really at this point try to corral it. They can't hit it direct on because of these extreme conditions. The spokesperson said it's like a tsunami of flames. So what they're trying to do is guide the fire in a certain direction toward the desert so that it burns itself out. But there is concern just below the White Sage fire is Jacob Lake and there is a small community there. There's a lodge there. And so firefighters want to protect that and make sure that the fire doesn't go down there. I spoke with one of the managers of that lodge. Her family has owned it for over a hundred years. It is part of their family. She broke down into tears when she described having to flee. Right now, the fire does seem to be moving in the opposite direction, but any moment the winds could shift and that's what firefighters are preparing for, Errol.
