ArabCon 2025 spotlights divisions over Trump’s Gaza policies

Dearborn, Michigan, the first American city where Arab-Americans make up the majority of the population. It was center stage in the 2024 presidential election. While Kamala Harris stayed away, then-candidate Donald Trump made a campaign stop here, specifically to court their votes. It worked. He won the Arab vote, and with that, the state of Michigan. Look, the Arab-American community is a large voting bloc here in the state of Michigan. And what you had was a candidate that was at least willing to show up to Dearborn, willing to talk to Arab-Americans about a peaceful outcome. Mike Hasham led Arab-Americans for Trump in 2024, handing out flyers like these and placing billboards around the Dearborn area, urging voters not to vote for Harris because of the Biden administration's handling of the war on Gaza. Hasham says he does not blame Trump for what's happening now. What we're facing is a war that was dumped on Donald Trump, a war that was handed over to Donald Trump to clean up the mess of Joe Biden. When Joe Biden was in his presidency, he should have stopped this war. Joe Biden failed to stop it, and now Trump has to deal with the aftermath. At Arabcon, a gathering of activists in Dearborn, the focus is trying to push Trump to fulfill his promise to bring peace, which Democrats say is within his power. He could end the war tomorrow. He could tell Netanyahu, stop, stop, or we're not going to give you more military weapons. Stop, and we're not going to protect you at the United Nations. Instead, Trump has given Netanyahu a blank check, and he's betrayed every promise he made to people in Dearborn and around this country. While the community here is divided over Trump's handling of the ongoing genocide in Gaza, they seem united on one point. They believe the Arab-American community sent a message in the last presidential election, and the next candidates who come here are going to have to earn their votes if they want to win the crucial state of Michigan.
