The situation has been exacerbated by China's response, adding a 34% tariff on U.S. goods, prompting U.S. President to suggest an additional 50% increase on Chinese products.

This ongoing trade conflict has created uncertainty for Apple, particularly regarding the tariffs' impact on its iPhone production in China. The company is assessing its options, which may include raising product prices or absorbing the costs internally, both of which could affect margins, demand, and sales growth. Despite these challenges, there is still a possibility that Apple might receive an exemption, similar to previous exemptions during Trump's first term.

Efforts by Apple to relocate production to other Asian countries such as Vietnam and India have yet to yield the desired results, as these nations also face tariffs. Additionally, the potential for transferring manufacturing operations back to the U.S. presents logistical and financial hurdles, making a swift resolution unlikely. In response to these uncertainties, the U.S. has announced a 104% tariff on Chinese imports, expected to begin imminently.

The impending tariffs have spurred a rush for iPhones, as consumers anticipate potential price increases. Apple remains undecided on whether to raise prices or absorb some of the expenses. Analysts predict a mixed approach, with selective price adjustments based on product models. Despite its robust financial position, concerns about Apple's long-term growth persist, contributing to investor apprehension.



Apple shares plummet amid tariff chaos

Apple's best selling and most important product is the iPhone and it's made in China. So more than any other company Apple needs clarity on tariffs and needs a deal on tariffs in China. But so far there's no movement on that whatsoever. So it's really become a proxy for China US trade talks in a way. Yeah absolutely. There's still so much uncertainty about how Apple is going to navigate the tariff situation whether that is raising prices whether that is absorbing these costs all of which would have you know detrimental sort of implications for its margins or demand and sales growth and so forth. There's also a possibility that they get an exemption as they did during the first Trump term. So there's so much uncertainty here and that's why we're seeing the stock really become the poster child for tariff related uncertainty and risk. Yeah especially after Trump has threatened to add another 50 percent tariffs on China after China retaliated with its own. Now we know that Apple has spent years trying to shift more production to other Asian countries Vietnam and now India. That idea is still not helping the stock all that much because those countries also face tariffs. That's right. Absolutely. And the idea that they're going to bring manufacturing back here all these any kind of changes to its supply chain. It's going to be it's going to take a long time. It's going to be very costly for them. So the idea that you can have some kind of quick solution to this is I think a little bit out of the realm of possibility. Right. And just to clarify here we are hearing from the White House that the 104 percent levy on China imports into the U.S. begins tomorrow. And of course we knew that April 9th would be the starting date for those tariffs. Let's talk a little bit here about the rush to buy iPhones because the assumption was that Apple will need to raise prices once the tariffs take effect and consumers are rushing to get there. I mean is that a given that Apple is going to raise prices. Well we just don't know what they're going to do at this point. They might have to raise prices. They might just absorb some of the costs and take a hit to their margins or earnings. Right now it's all very unclear but certainly a lot of people I speak to expect some sort of combination of the both. Maybe they'll raise prices where they can maybe on the higher end models. Maybe they will just have to absorb some of this. I mean they are still viewed as a very high quality company in terms of their cash flow in terms of their balance sheet strength. So they are able to take a little bit of a hit. But this is a company where we're already kind of concerned about its long term growth profile. And that's why you've seen people just you know flee the stock especially over the past several days.
