Israeli forces have increased activity in several Gaza City neighborhoods, with reports of intensified strikes and further displacement of residents. The Israeli military is preparing to call up additional reserves, drawing international condemnation and renewed calls for a ceasefire. While Hamas has accepted a ceasefire proposal similar to one Israel previously agreed to, Israel has not yet officially responded and appears set to continue its military campaign.

Smoke rose above Gaza City on Thursday, heralding the next stage of the war. Israeli troops are already active in the neighbourhoods of Zeytoun and Jabalia, while residents have reported intensified strikes on Sabra. With so much of the territory no longer safe for civilians, residents face a dilemma. Last time I fled to the south, but this time there's no way I'm doing that, because displacement is a death sentence. Let's face it with honour next to our homes. And in Deir al-Bala, an Israeli strike sent the tents of displaced families up in flames on Thursday. The call-up of 60,000 Israeli reserves is set to begin in early September, and 20,000 more already in active service will see their deployment extended. The plans have drawn widespread condemnation. That it is vital to reach immediately a ceasefire in Gaza and the unconditional release of all hostages, and to avoid the massive deaths and destruction that a military operation against Gaza City would inevitably cause. Hamas accepted a ceasefire proposal on Monday, and Israel is yet to officially respond. But even though Qatari negotiators say the text is practically identical to a proposal Israel had already agreed to in June, Benjamin Netanyahu appears determined to push ahead with plans to capture Gaza City.
