The Federal Opposition is embroiled in a new drama with Andrew Hastie quitting shadow cabinet after being told he wouldn't be involved in immigration policy. The West Australian MP insists he still supports Sussan Ley as leader.

Andrew Hastie, the Shadow Home Affairs Minister, has resigned from the Liberal Party's front bench after receiving a letter from party leader Susan Lee stating he would no longer lead the Coalition's response on immigration or develop related policy. Hastie said this prompted his decision to step down, as immigration is a core responsibility of his portfolio. 

Hastie, now on the back bench, expressed his intention to continue speaking out on key issues, including immigration and net zero policy. He is the second shadow frontbencher to move to the back bench in a month, joining Jacinta Nampijinpa Price. Despite the internal party instability, Hastie affirmed his support for Susan Lee's leadership and stated he would not challenge her for the leadership role.

And so when it was made clear that I wouldn't have any leadership in that role, I thought it was time for me to depart. The move now makes Andrew Hastie a free agent. I want to speak out on issues like immigration because I think it's really important. Also making good on a threat Mr Hastie made just last month over another contentious issue for the Coalition, net zero. It took courage that if he wasn't satisfied that he step away from a position, a position that comes with influence. He's decided to make that stand, and we respect that. Another day, another instalment of a soap opera that Australians are heartily sick of. Andrew Hastie is the second Shadow front bencher to move to the back bench in a month, joining Jacinta Nabujimba-Price. But despite this, Mr Hastie insists not only does he support Susan Lee as leader, he will not be challenging her for the top job. There's no challenge to Susan. I support Susan. Tried to do this in good faith, and here we are. We know where it leads. It's drip, drip, drip, drip until the cascade at the end. It's a slow-motion shipwreck. The Liberal Party are a shambles. What the Liberal Party are in at the moment is a fight for their lives. Tonight, the Coalition is trying to appear united, riding out yet another wave of instability. Susan has got the most difficult job in politics. We want to see her succeed. I strongly support Susan Lee's leadership, and I back her every step of the way. Matthew Karstunen, 10 News.
