Rolling into hospital calm and composed, this was Ahmed Al Ahmed on Sunday night, not long after that heroic intercept which has earned him worldwide recognition. He spoke of his gratitude and the faith which carried him through. One that's far from over, with another surgery planned for tomorrow, the result of several gunshot wounds to his arm. But he has been well enough to receive visitors, and there's been no shortage of them, from the Premier to the Prime Minister. Very strong. Your heart is strong. I think you'll get courage. It is inspiring. And the Governor-General, who came with flowers, hand-picked from Admiralty House, as well as a message from King Charles. For Ahmed, he wanted specific thanks. He'd watched at close range that moment of absolute heroics that we've all been staggered by and so grateful for. Another fighter, Anthony Mundine, also stopped by, as did representatives from Ahmed's home country. These people don't know him, but they all know what he did, to protect people he didn't know either. I was sitting at home and I thought, oh my God, I'm going to cry. What this man has done is absolutely amazing. I had to come in. He deserves all the things he can get. He's already a national hero, and while Ahmed didn't act for recognition, the Governor-General says there's no doubt he will be formally honoured for his bravery. We are a brave country. Ahmed Al Ahmed represents the best of our country. While our gratitude is immeasurable, support for his recovery continues to pour in, with a fundraiser now tipped past $2 million.
