The peak of hurricane season has already passed, but it's far from over.

The current hurricane season remains active, with the official end not arriving until late November. Although September has seen fewer named storms and no U.S. landfalls, experts note that this is unusual but not unprecedented. Imelda was named later than average for the ninth storm of the season, and while the number of hurricanes is below average, the number of major hurricanes is ahead of typical trends, including a recent Category 5 storm.

Looking forward, meteorologists are watching for possible tropical development in the Bay of Campeche and off the coast of Africa, though immediate threats are considered manageable. The warm waters in the Gulf of Mexico and the historically busy month of October mean that further tropical activity remains possible, and continued vigilance is advised.

After Imelda, is there still danger in the tropics?

Well, hurricane season here is certainly in prime time, and we still have a ways to go. Hurricane season doesn't officially end until after Thanksgiving at the end of November. But by month, again, August, September, and October are the three busiest months, and we're making it through the month of September with no U.S. landfalls for even a tropical storm, which is good news. It has happened before. It's happened even in the past decade. But it is kind of rare that we make it through September with no named storms during the month of September. So Imelda was named yesterday, on the 28th of September. That was 12 days later than the average naming of the ninth named storm. And again, we've had three hurricanes so far. The third hurricane of the year is typically named on September 7th. We're running behind there. So again, as we've been dealing with Humberto, not named until long after September 7th in the past several days. And we do have one metric here on this board where we're ahead of average. Our third major hurricane doesn't typically form until October 28th. And we have had three major hurricanes so far this year. Humberto was a Category 5, and that was our third major hurricane of the season. Still a four at this point. Looking ahead, we are watching, even though there's not much out there yet, at the end of the month into early October, a small chance of development in the Bay of Campeche there, the southwestern part of the Gulf. Small chance of development there. It's not a whole lot of moisture there right now, but we need to keep an eye out for a weak disturbance there. And then off the coast of Africa, we have a tropical wave that'll be organizing, and that one has a slightly better chance of organizing. But in the short term, the rain and wind that we're dealing with here in the Carolinas and at times some gusty little squalls near the east side of Florida, the short-term threat, it's a manageable threat out there. We got to keep an eye out for the Gulf, though. The waters are very warm there, and we may still see some trouble. October, often a very busy time for the tropics.
