More tornadoes were reported in North Dakota on Sept. 14 than the state often has in an entire year.

A significant tornado outbreak struck the northern plains, with over 20 tornadoes reported across North and South Dakota in a single day. North Dakota alone saw a preliminary count of 20 tornadoes, nearly matching its annual average of 22.5 and coming close to the state’s single-day record of 24 tornadoes set in 1976.

The outbreak also brought reports of flooding, hail, and damaging winds, particularly in Nebraska and Kansas. While the final tornado count is still being confirmed, the event stands out for its intensity and the high number of tornadoes concentrated in such a short period.

A year's worth of tornadoes struck the Dakotas in just a day

Welcome back to AccuWeather Ahead. A tornado outbreak struck the northern plains over the weekend. Over 20 tornadoes swept across the Dakotas yesterday on Sunday. A preliminary count of 20 tornadoes impacted North Dakota alone. North Dakota averages about 22.5 tornadoes every year. And just to put this into context, North Dakota saw more tornadoes yesterday, Sunday, than they did the total for 39 other individual years across the state. That's since 1950. Now, the record for most tornadoes in a single day in North Dakota is 24. That was set back on June 11, 1976. So a very active time across the plains here yesterday. And you can see, these are all the storm reports that we had across the United States over Sunday. And you can see these include flooding, wind, hail, and tornado reports, and lots of damaging wind and hail here off to the south across Nebraska and Kansas. But there was a lot of rotation. The mid-levels of the atmosphere were just spinning like a top across the Dakotas. So that's why we have all those storm reports. And yeah, taking a closer look, it's mainly just tornado reports. We had a couple of flooding reports there near Bismarck. We also had a couple of hail reports there up to the north, and even some wind reports here and there. But just overall, all these tornado reports, 22 by last count for both the Dakotas. And we also had a tornado reported in Kansas as well. So you can see, taking those other ones off, all these tornadoes were reported there along that line of storms that were making their way across the Dakotas around this time yesterday afternoon. So very active into the weekend and a start to this week. But we will be watching out for more storms coming up. So yes, the record for North Dakota for most tornadoes in a year is 61. The most for an individual day was 24. And right now, the preliminary count is 19 from those storms that we had yesterday.
