2025 is one of only two years since 1950 that have had no named storms in the Atlantic from Aug. 29 to Sept. 11.

The Atlantic hurricane season began with a quick start, producing six named storms, including Chantal and Erin, which caused flooding along the US East Coast. However, activity has significantly decreased, resulting in an unusually quiet period during what is statistically the peak of the season.

Historically, two-thirds of Atlantic storms occur between late August and early October, yet there have been no named storms since Tropical Storm Fernand faded at the end of August. This marks only the second time since 1950 that such a prolonged lull has occurred during this critical window, with the last instance in 1992.

A historic lull in the Atlantic hurricane season

It may not feel like it right now, but the Atlantic hurricane season did have a relatively quick start. Now, things have really quieted down. We've had six named storms so far. Chantal brought significant flooding into the Carolinas. Erin, probably the most memorable storm for others outside of the Carolinas because of the massive waves and coastal flooding that it also brought to parts of the East Coast. And we have a long ways to go. Again, the peak of hurricane season is upon us. In fact, statistically, it was Wednesday, September 10th. But we have a long way to go, and it has been remarkable how quiet it has been over the past two weeks. Climatologically, we should see a lot of storms around this time. 2 3rds of all named storms in the Atlantic Basin occur between August 20th and October 10th. It's an approximately 50-day window. We're a little more than 20 days into that 50-day window, and things are very quiet right now. But we do have a long ways to go. Just a quick look at September 10th history, 88% of September 10ths have a named storm somewhere in the Atlantic Basin. But we did not have one this year in the slim minority. We can add 2025 to this list of years with no named storms on September 10th. Now, the most recent activity we've had in the Atlantic with a name was Tropical Storm Fernand. Fernand looked fairly significant here with a decent swirl of low-level clouds on August 27th. It faded away on August 28th. As we look at history, there was only one other mid-season lull more significant than this since 1950. You have to go back to 1992. That was the only other year since 1950 with such a long period of time, from the end of August through mid-September with no activity. And Fernand, again, ended at the same time, around the 28th to the 29th through the present time. No named storms. We can close with a look at Andrew. The quiet spell that followed Andrew picked back up on September 17th.
