Zoo Tampa, already the largest non-profit manatee critical care center in the country, expanded even further with the opening this month of two new 16,000 gallon critical care pools.

Zoo Tampa has expanded its Manatee Critical Care Center, increasing the number of pools from three to five to accommodate a growing number of manatees in need of care. The expansion comes after a record number of manatees, many of which were injured by boats or abandoned as babies, were treated at the facility.

Since 1991, Zoo Tampa has cared for 600 manatees, with most successfully returned to the wild. The new 16,000-gallon pools are expected to help the zoo continue its rehabilitation efforts, which are visible to the public to raise awareness about manatee conservation.

This is Robert Boyd in Tampa and you're looking at one of the newest additions here at Zoo Tampa. It's called a critical care pool. It's like a hospital for manatees. Now let's introduce you to some of the patients. Say hello to Hundo, Slushy and Biscayne. All three abandoned his babies and now being cared for at Zoo Tampa. This month they expanded their manatee critical care unit from three pools to five pools. There has been such a need to increase our capacity with a number of manatees that we've been receiving over the last 30 years. So we've been working really hard for the last two years to expand and we are ready and open. Molly Lippincott, senior curator of Florida and Marine Life, says at one point last year they had a record 28 manatees in their care. Many of them injured by boaters while the others were sick or abandoned as babies. This is really exciting that we have that needed space. This has taken us many years to get here and our team is very proud of our hospital and want to continue to have that grow. The team is also proud to say out of the 600 manatees in total that they have taken in since 1991, almost all of them were able to return to the wild and that process all begins right here in these 16,000 gallon pools. With these pools we're hopeful that we'll be able to take in more animals and it really depends on size, case, that sort of situation. The entire manatee hospital is in full view of the public. Zoo Tampa says it's people who can make the biggest difference when it comes to keeping these amazing animals safe. We do know that it starts with the heart and we want people to see the things that impact manatees on a daily basis and that if you care then we can care, we can all do this together.
