Australia has included YouTube in its ban on social media accounts for children under 16. Google has threatened to sue parliament over the decision, but Prime Minister Albanese says his government won't be intimidated.

Australia has broadened its social media restrictions for minors, adding YouTube to the list of platforms banned for users under 16. This decision follows recommendations from the eSafety Commissioner and comes amid ongoing concerns about the impact of online bullying on young people. The ban also includes Facebook, Instagram, Snapchat, TikTok, and X, and is set to take effect soon. 

The government has faced criticism from some quarters, with tech companies and political groups questioning the effectiveness of a blanket ban. While YouTube Kids will remain accessible, children under 16 will not be able to hold their own accounts or access restricted content and comments. The government maintains that the measure prioritises child safety over platform interests.

The announcement comes a day after parent company Google threatened legal action against the government. I will not be intimidated by legal threats. YouTube unrelenting, saying it's not social media and that the government's announcement reverses a clear public commitment to exclude YouTube from this ban. The Greens calling it a government backflip. A blanket ban is simply a blunt instrument that will not make kids safer. Experts say the onus falls on tech giants. When you've got profits in children, they don't mix. Details of the legislation are scant, but it's clear the government is trying to traverse both sides of the argument. YouTube kids will remain usable to all, but a child under 16 won't be able to hold an account of their own, meaning they won't have access to restricted content and importantly won't be able to use the comments section.
