A young New Zealand fur seal has made a triumphant return to the wild just six weeks after surviving a severe shark bite. The juvenile female was discovered in distress in the canals of Newport, north of Brisbane.

A juvenile New Zealand fur seal was found injured in a canal north of Brisbane, far from its typical habitat. After suffering wounds from a shark encounter, the seal was rescued and deemed strong enough for rehabilitation. It spent six weeks recovering at a Gold Coast theme park, receiving medical care and rest in a private pool.

The seal was then transported across the border to New South Wales and released near the Solitary Islands off Coffs Harbour, fitted with a satellite tag to monitor its progress. Since its release, the seal has traveled nearly 70 kilometers, and the data collected will assist future rescue efforts for seals in distress.

From the deck to a dock in a cage, the injured seal was feisty. The animal had been seen in distress in a canal at Newport, north of Brisbane, last month, well north of its usual habitat, and it was wounded. A run-in with a shark had left it skin-torn, but this juvenile New Zealander fur seal was deemed by the rescue team strong enough to just maybe pull through. So for six weeks it called the Gold Coast theme park home, a private pool and a big dose of medicine. And this week, a road trip across the border into New South Wales, then back on a boat out to the solitary islands off Coffs Harbour, now sporting a bit of bling, a satellite tank. If there were high-fives among the team, then what appeared to be a farewell wave from the seal. Straight back into the water and straight back into all its normal, natural behaviours. She came out, she started grooming, face scrubbing, you know, just twirling in the water. Since the release, she's already clocked up almost 70km, heading south to Scott's Head. The satellite tag will soon detach, but the information gathered will help the rescue team when next there's another seal in distress.
