U.S. President Donald Trump has signed an executive order increasing tariffs on Canadian goods that don't meet the terms of the Canada-U.S.-Mexico Agreement to 35 per cent.

US President Donald Trump has signed an executive order raising tariffs on Canadian goods from 25% to 35%. The move comes amid ongoing trade negotiations, with Trump citing Canada's lack of cooperation on fentanyl control and retaliation against previous US actions as reasons for the increase. 

While Canada has not reached a new trade agreement, Mexico has been granted a 90-day extension to continue discussions with the US. Canadian officials, including Mark Carney, have indicated that negotiations will persist, and there is domestic pressure for Canada to respond assertively to the tariff hike.

In Ottawa, Mark Carney had spent the day in his office as his team in Washington competed on the ground for the White House's attention. We haven't spoken to Canada today. He's called and we'll see. In the White House document, he complains Canada has failed to cooperate in curbing the ongoing flood of fentanyl and has retaliated against the United States for the President's actions. On Wednesday, Carney made it clear he wants the best deal for Canadians and that might not happen by August 1st. Negotiations will continue until we do. Then he announced a plan to recognize Palestinian statehood. That got Trump's attention. Just after midnight, he wrote online, this will make it very hard for us to make a trade deal with them. Oh, Canada. But later, softened up. You know, I didn't like what they said, but you know, that's their opinion. I didn't like that. Not a deal breaker. Canada didn't get a deal, but one North American partner did get some breathing room. Mexico's president announcing she landed a 90-day extension to keep talking with Trump. Back in Canada, some urging Carney to fight back and not take a bad deal. I told the prime minister, do not roll over, hit that guy back as hard as we possibly can. And that's what we need to do. And we can do it.
