Yemen's Saudi-backed National Shield Forces have recaptured the port city of Mukalla, the capital of Hadramout province, from the Southern Transitional Council (STC) after a series of airstrikes and ground fighting. The STC, which is supported by the United Arab Emirates, had seized control of the province the previous month.

At least 80 troops have been reported killed, with dozens more wounded or captured since the escalation began. The UAE has since announced the withdrawal of its forces from Yemen. In response to the ongoing conflict, Saudi Arabia has called for a conference with all southern Yemeni factions, with the STC agreeing to participate.

Yemeni forces regain control of strategic port after days of airstrikes

Troops belonging to Yemen's Saudi-backed National Shield Forces entered the port city of Mukalla. It is the capital of Hadramout province. They did so regaining control from southern separatists, the Southern Transitional Council, who seized control of the province early last month. This morning, at the headquarters of the 2nd military region, we welcomed our brothers from the National Shield Forces. Those forces, the Hadramout Protection Forces and the Hadrami elite, are an integral part of the security of the governorate and the entire region. The Southern Transitional Council wants independence from the north of Yemen. It is backed by the United Arab Emirates. It says at least 80 troops have been killed in fighting with Saudi-backed forces and in airstrikes since Friday, and dozens of others have been wounded and captured. The UAE said on Saturday that it had withdrawn its forces. Yemen has been split for more than a decade between warring regions in a civil war. Tensions in the country have deepened a rift between Saudi Arabia and the UAE as they support rival groups. Riyadh said on Saturday it would host a conference with all southern factions in Yemen to discuss solutions to the southern cause. The Southern Transitional Council agreed to attend.
