Police and the Secret Service are investigating a break-in at Vice President JD Vance's Ohio home. CBS News' Shanelle Kaul has more.

Authorities are investigating a break-in at Vice President JD Vance's home in Ohio, which took place late at night. The Vance family was not present during the incident, as they had already returned to Washington, D.C. 

The suspect, identified as 26-year-old William DeFore Reid, allegedly attempted to enter the home by smashing windows with a hammer and also damaged a Secret Service vehicle. Reid was detained at the scene and faces multiple charges, including criminal trespass and vandalism. Vice President Vance expressed gratitude to law enforcement and requested privacy for his family.

An early morning break-in at the home of Vice President J.D. Vance in Ohio, and now the Secret Service and Cincinnati Police are investigating. CBS News' Chanel Call is in the newsroom. So, Chanel, was anybody from the Vance family inside that home or anywhere near the home? No, they were not inside the home when this happened, thankfully, Reid. And here's what we know at this point in time. We know this happened late last night at Vice President J.D. Vance's Ohio home. So, again, the family wasn't in Ohio when this happened. The home itself is just east of downtown Cincinnati. So, Secret Service, Reid, is saying that they heard this loud noise, a loud bang, sometime around midnight last night, and they say someone was trying to break in. They used a hammer to smash some windows. They also say that a Secret Service vehicle was also damaged as the suspect was trying to get closer to the home itself. So, again, J.D. Vance and his family were not in the home when this happened, but he did talk about it on social media. So, I just want to show you what we're looking at on my screen here. This was a social media post where he says, I appreciate everyone's well wishes about the attack at our home. As far as I can tell, a crazy person tried to break in by hammering the windows. I'm grateful to the Secret Service and the Cincinnati police for responding quickly. We weren't even home as we'd returned to D.C. already. One request to the media, he says, we try to protect our kids as much as possible from the realities of this life of public service. And in that light, he says, I'm skeptical of the news value of plastering images of our home with holes in the windows. As for the suspect, we know that he has been identified by the Secret Service and Cincinnati police as 26-year-old William DeFore Reid. We know that he was detained right away, and he's facing three charges, including obstructing official business, criminal damage or endangering, and criminal trespass and vandalism. Again, Vice President J.D. Vance and his family, thankfully, were not inside when this happened, and Secret Service has now detained the suspect involved. All right, Chanel Call with that update.
