The court also imposed awareness courses and, for some defendants, bans from social media. The Macrons have faced similar falsehoods in the past and are currently pursuing a separate defamation lawsuit in the United States.

The ruling makes sense because it recognizes the cyber-harassment and all the defendants were found guilty. What is important also is the fact that there is a provisional enforcement on the awareness courses and, for some of the defendants, banning access to their social media accounts. The French first couple have long faced such falsehoods, including allegations that Brigitte Macron was born under the name Jean-Michel Treuneux, the actual name of her older brother. The Macrons have also largely ignored barbs and criticism over their age difference, but have recently begun challenging them in court. Monday's ruling also marks a victory for the Macrons as they pursue a separate, high-profile U.S. defamation lawsuit. That's against right-wing influencer and podcaster Candace Owens, who has also claimed Brigitte Macron was born male.
