A Wyandotte County sheriff's deputy was seriously injured following an exchange of gunfire with an individual at a residence where the deputy was providing a safety standby as someone moved out. The confrontation escalated when a person inside the home engaged the deputy, resulting in both the deputy and the suspect being shot. The deputy was transported to a hospital with life-threatening injuries, while the suspect, after barricading himself inside the home, was later taken into custody and is reported to be in stable condition.

The Kansas City, Kansas Police Department and other local agencies responded to the incident, and the area remains secured as investigations continue. The Kansas Bureau of Investigation will review the officer-involved shooting, while the local police department will handle the investigation into the shooting of the deputy. Authorities have expressed their commitment to supporting the injured deputy and their family.

state. Just after three p.m. K. C. K. Police Department responded on a request from for assistance from the Wyandotte County Sheriff's Department. Initial reports is that Wyandotte County Sheriff's deputy was in the area of the 2600 block of South 30th standing by why an individual removed items who were moving out of the house. They were standing by, um, for, uh, just standing by for safety while they did it. At some point, the individual inside the house there that became a conference confrontation and they exchanged gunfire. The Wyandotte County deputy was transported to an area hospital in serious condition. Uh, at that time, as the Kansas City, Kansas Police Department was responding, the individual continued to, uh, fire on the responding officers who then returned fire. The individual barricaded himself inside the home on. Eventually, we were able to negotiate him out of the home, and he came out at about five o'clock. Uh, and as he came out, he had been hit by gunfire. So at this point, um, it's still an active scene. The area is still, um, blocked off. We'll do everything we can for individuals who need to get to their homes to get to their homes. Um, later today, there will be a more detailed press conference, uh, from Sheriff's optic Wyandotte County Sheriff regarding the extent of injuries to the deputy. Anything specific you mentioned about the deputy's injuries right now? All we can tell you he was transported in serious life threatening. Um, he had serious life threatening injuries. Was anyone else hit at all other than other than the suspect? No one else other than suspect suspects condition. Currently, we know what his condition is. He had gunshot wounds, but he's in stable condition. From what? From what I know now, no, there was. There was no gunfire between a man and a woman. The sheriff's deputy was there, um, standing by why individual removed items out of the home who was leaving, um, who was moving out of the home and the individual inside came out, and that's where the confrontation took place with the sheriff's deputy. So there was someone who was moving out outside. The inside comes out confrontation. That's the initial reports that we have anything to say. I mean, obviously, law enforcement here to protect and serve situation like this dangerous situations. Yes. And, um, you know, we we understand that danger. Everything we do is dangerous. And, um, you know, it is when you when you think about this situation, we have men and women that are putting their lives at risk every day to make sure that we all are are safe. Um, and as more stories and as more details come out, you'll understand just what that deputy did. Any other questions? Just the area hospital. Yes. And just just to be clear, it was a second person inside the home. We still don't know. Yes, it was another. It wasn't the party that he was responding. I see. All right. They were responding to, uh, stand by. Yes, yes. Oh, what's that for now? I guess. What's the next step for law enforcement? Well, there's a couple things that's that's gonna happen now. Um, I said we're gonna continue to process the scene. Uh, and and the big thing is make sure that we're giving care and support, uh, to that deputy and their family. That's that's our number one priority. And then the whole investigative process of dealing with the suspect. And also another element to this is that as our officers responded from K. C. K. We did exchange gunfire. And whenever we have an officer involved shooting, we have the K. B. I. Come out and investigate that part of it. So you will be seeing the K. B. I. Responding to handle that part of it. But the actual shooting part, the K. C. K. Police Department will be conducting that investigation. Initially, that's the initial reports that we have. But the K. C. K. Police Department will will take over the actual shooting investigation of the deputy. And, um, K. B. I. Will handle our officers involved shooting. But how long was the barricade? Um, probably about 22 hours. Um, like I said, and, you know, great job by our police negotiators who was able to negotiate them out. And one other thing I would like to thank all the, uh, area agencies that responded to assist Fairway Police Department, Shawnee Police Department, Mission Police Department, Overland Park Police Department, Leavenworth Police Department. Their tactical unit was on the way to assist our tactical unit. So I want to thank and excuse me if I left out, um, one any of the agencies as well as, um, as soon as it happened. Um, our federal partners are U. S. Marsh U. S. Marshall. Uh, FBI was on the phone immediately reaching out to me to see what what we needed to help with this investigation. Right. Thank you.
