Women in the US Congress participated in an annual softball game against members of the press, with the event serving as a rare opportunity to set aside political differences. The game, which was called early due to rain, saw Congress win 5-3 and was played to support the Young Survival Coalition, a charity aiding young adults with breast cancer.

Unlike the male congressional baseball game, which divides teams along party lines, the women's game brings together members from both parties to play as a single team. The event, co-founded by Congresswoman Debbie Wasserman Schultz following her own breast cancer diagnosis, has raised nearly $5 million for the cause over 17 years, highlighting the importance of unity and awareness for breast health.

A women's softball game in Washington last night pitted the first branch against the fourth estate. Congress beat the press five to three in a game called by rain in the fourth inning. Like few things in the capital, it is a friendly rivalry with a purpose. Caitlin Huey Burns has tonight's Eye on America. Marcella Powell is not a huge softball fan and she's no political junkie, so why would she travel more than a thousand miles from her Pensacola, Florida home to Washington D.C. for last night's annual congressional women's softball game? When this came up, I was just like, I really want to do it. So I did it. I mean, with no hesitation, no effort, no second thoughts. Unlike their male counterparts, whose annual baseball game pits Republicans against Democrats, the congressional women, who begin practicing months in advance, play together. No parties, just team Congress against the bad news babes of the media. Republican Kimberlyn King-Hines has enjoyed that break from partisan politics on the Hill. Because I'm going to be honest, you know, when you get in there, it's like team red or team blue, right? And there's a clear delineated line, but here, man, it's just women playing, coming together, playing for a good cause. Just say it! That good cause is why Marcella Powell is here. The game is played for a charity, the Young Survival Coalition, which helps young adults with breast cancer. To know me is to know me before cancer. I was just this energetic blossom, this ray of sunshine. Powell was diagnosed at 31. When cancer came, it kind of like hid me. YSC helped me find my joy again. The Young Survival Coalition provided her with resources and connections she couldn't find anywhere else. It don't have to be about cancer, whatever you want to share. Powell now organizes monthly meetings with fellow survivors. It seems like more than just a support group. It's a family. Family was among the reasons King-Hines wanted to play. Her mother and sister are both breast cancer survivors. You know when they said that's the cause that we were playing for, I'm like, bet, I'm down. Congresswoman Debbie Wasserman Schultz co-founded the game in 2009, after she was diagnosed with breast cancer at just 41. What does this game mean to you? I mean, it's just very emotional. It's so deeply personal. A big part of this is raising awareness about women paying attention to their breast health. 17 games later, the event has raised close to $5 million for the Young Survival Coalition. It's a wonderful feeling that everyone can come together for breast cancer. I mean, it's something that can impact anyone.
