A winter storm is expected to affect the Northeast United States on Boxing Day, with snow, sleet, and freezing rain forecast for cities including New York City, Philadelphia, and Hartford. The heaviest snow accumulations are likely in the Catskills and northeastern Poconos, where up to 6 to 12 inches are possible.

Leading up to the storm, Christmas Eve and Christmas Day will see near-average temperatures and some light precipitation, with a weak system potentially causing freezing drizzle in parts of Pennsylvania and New York. The main storm is expected to begin Friday evening, bringing significant travel impacts to the region.

It's kind of filling in a little bit, but this is not a big event here. The heavier snow is going to be to the north of Worcester, but we'll be watching the system as it pulls into Portland and Bangor, Maine just beginning to pick up in Bangor, Maine soon and up into areas around Vermont, New Hampshire. Widespread snow. The Adirondack seeing a generally light snowfall in progress right now. So into Wednesday, Christmas Eve. Still some lingering snow in this region here into Maine and northern parts of New England. Quieter weather where we don't have any bright color coding. It's basically a near average mid to late December day. Christmas Eve looking at 47 in Philadelphia. That's 3 degrees above the historical average. Boston just a degree below the norm with a little bit of light snow. No significant impacts there on Wednesday, Christmas Eve, Detroit, 34 and cloudy Baltimore 51. That's five above the average there. Other cities in the Northeast, New York, quintessential Christmas Eve. There are 43 partly sunny. A nice day to get out and about your historical averages right around where you are DC is running a little warm. Looking pretty decent there into Pittsburgh at 38 degrees. Now Christmas Day we got a sneaky little disturbance that scoots through. You can see a little bit of rain plotted here. I want to show you future radar at a moment, but I'm going to use that to transition into the Friday mess. Friday is going to be a stripe of snow moving into New York City and Connecticut and snow over to sleet some freezing rain possible but snow and sleet. Big issue here into the pink zone and heavy rain a little farther southwest. Now Christmas Day in Philadelphia. You can see 45 and some showers there. Boston 39 touch real close to historical averages a little above average in Detroit and Baltimore though, and some other spots. There's some showers in DC. This sneaky system will be enough though beyond the showers in Pittsburgh to bring perhaps just a little bit of a light glaze of ice just in a few spots. Freezing drizzle or light freezing rain. Here it is. Here comes this week disturbance. You can see just a little bit of that pink on the map. Maybe Williamsport PA Bradford PA. Jamestown, New York. Keep an eye out early on. Keep an eye out early Christmas morning, maybe even down into areas near Lebanon, PA or areas around, say, Sunbury. We could see a little bit of freezing drizzle or freezing rain early Christmas morning before many wake up just a sneaky little system there, but then into the day following Christmas Boxing Day. Here we get into trouble on Friday. Widespread snow building in some sleet, some freezing rain, and that's going to be a bigger storyline for us, especially in New York City and Trenton, Philadelphia. You can see some snow moving over to some sleep, so Friday and Friday night this moves in and we will be concerned about some widespread areas of snow accumulating snow. The heaviest snow will be in this blue zone. We got ice farther South. The leading edge of this 7 PM Friday moving into Hartford, so it's probably going to begin in New York City around 5 or 6 PM. Friday evening and how much snow are we looking at? Well, one to three inches in Philadelphia. There is a strong signal of sleep moving in after a period of snow in Philly, especially at a Baltimore. It's going to be a sleet fest in South Central PA and into areas northwest of Baltimore with potential in the northeastern Poconos 6 to 12 inches of snow into the Catskills, so that's going to be a high impact event there.
