Will Soulsman always dreamt of first class cricket, but never as an opener. With the role that I'm playing now, opening the batting, it's obviously not something I imagined a month ago, but you can't really control those things and I think I've just had full faith and belief that I can do it. The 21-year-old was caught on the back foot when told he was moving from seven to opener last game. No, I didn't scoff at it, but I did find it quite hard. You thought it was like a joke? Yeah, not so much a joke, but just like an eye raise and what I've heard is that a few people raise their eyebrows at it as well. Partnering Sam Constas, there was no pre-game plan. I went to him even before we flew out to Brisbane, I said, you know, do you want to catch up for a coffee or do you want to get dinner together and talk about it? And he just said no. His words was less said the better and I was like, okay, well, I'll take care of my end and you can do yours. That he did. Oh, that's a good shot. That'll bring up his 50. While he's playing as a batter, Will is also a fast bowler, but has battled injury. Bowling's hard and being an all-rounder is even harder. I mean, you look at Cam Green and Jack Edwards, even now, like their journey to be able to cope with that workload has been an up and down one. Riding his own rollercoaster, he's taking lessons from Constas' journey. When he's down, it's 10 articles and the whole nation's looking at you, you know, and that's such a high level as well. And I was lucky that I felt like I learnt a lot of lessons in the background, playing great cricket, training when there's no one else watching you train. Will's scrapped to get where he is. Now his family will be able to watch him at the SCG. Even a month ago, I wasn't thinking I'd be playing this game, let alone playing it as a possible opening batsman. You know, it's just shows that, yeah, within a month things can change and you can never really look too far ahead because you just don't know what it looks like.
