A UPS cargo plane, a 34-year-old MD-11, crashed during takeoff from Muhammad Ali International Airport in Louisville, Kentucky, while en route to Honolulu. The crash occurred at approximately 5:15 p.m. Eastern time and involved three crew members: two pilots and a flight engineer.

The incident resulted in a significant fire near the runway, with debris and flames affecting a nearby industrial area. Authorities closed the airport and issued a five-mile shelter-in-place order as emergency crews responded. The National Transportation Safety Board and FAA are investigating the cause of the crash.

Good evening. I'm Maurice Dubois. I'm John Dickerson. We begin with the breaking news in Louisville. A UPS cargo plane bound for Honolulu crashed today. It was taking off from Muhammad Ali International Airport. It happened at about 5 15 p.m. Eastern time. Louisville is a major hub for the United Parcel Service. Chris Van Cleve covers transportation for us and has the latest, Chris. Mhm. This was a 34 year old M. D. 11 with three crew members, two pilots and a flight engineer on board. It appears something went catastrophically wrong as this plane was accelerating down the runway in Louisville. We're gonna show you some video. It appears to show at least one, possibly two of the plane's three engines on fire as it was in the process of taking off. Whatever happened happened quickly. The plane did not stay in the air very long. It would have been loaded down with a lot of fuel, enough fuel to take it from Kentucky all the way to Honolulu. That's why you're gonna see substantial fire that is burning just off the runway there at the Louisville Airport. That airport is gonna be closed during the immediate response to this. We understand there's about a five mile shelter in place order there because of widespread fire debris. It looks to be stretched a quarter of a mile, maybe a half a mile. All of it on fire. It came down in an industrial area. Semi trucks are burning. A recycling center is in that area as well as people who work in warehouses. The factories there that need to be accounted for. We don't know at this point how many people on the ground may have been in those businesses. We do understand three people were on that U. P. S. Flight, a 34 year old M. D. 11, a converted airliner that's been flying for U. P. S. Since 2006. That's one of the workhorses of the U. P. S. Fleet. It's a three engine wide body jet that they have been using for years. Uh, this now certainly what will happen now, the National Transportation Safety Board and the F. A. A. Will send investigators spoke with the N. T. S. B. They are gathering information. They're figuring out their plan. They will be the lead agency here trying to piece together what went so catastrophically wrong. It appears whatever happened happened during takeoff.
