Extensive damage has been found at oil and gas facilities in Deir ez-Zur, northeast Syria, following years of conflict and control changes. The infrastructure, once a significant contributor to Syria's GDP, now faces a lengthy and challenging reconstruction process led by the Syrian petroleum company.

International energy companies from the US, Europe, and the Middle East have shown interest in investing in rehabilitation projects. Restoring just one major site is expected to take at least a year, underscoring the scale of the challenge for Syria's energy sector.

Until a couple of days ago, this site and others in the region were controlled by fighters from the Kurdish-backed Syrian Democratic Forces, the SDF. Now executives and engineers from the Syrian petroleum company are prioritizing the reconstruction program. The priority is to focus on the gas, to support the electricity because we are the driver of the economy here in Syria and those additional funds are going to bring or reflect positively to the local people. Keblawi says US, European and Middle Eastern energy companies are lining up to invest in rehabilitation and construction projects. Before Syria's civil war, oil and gas energy production made up 20% of GDP. But the country went from producing 380,000 barrels of oil a day to as few as 15,000 when ISIL and then the SDF took control of production. It'll take at least a year to get just this site back online, I'm told. And it's only when you see the scale of devastation up close that you begin to appreciate the extraordinary unprecedented challenge this government has in getting its energy infrastructure back online.
