The case has attracted widespread attention in Japan, with public opinion divided over Yamagami's motives and background. The incident also led to scrutiny of the Unification Church, to which Yamagami's mother belonged, and its connections to Japan's ruling Liberal Democratic Party, resulting in several cabinet resignations.

Well, Al Jazeera's Patrick Fock joins us live now from Tokyo. Patrick, so Yamagami, as we said, they had already pleaded guilty to the killing of Shinzo Abe. Talk us through the verdict and what happened in court. Well, there's been no word on what the court had to say exactly. But you might argue that this was a straightforward decision. Really, the court had to confirm the verdict. And the sentence was what the prosecution had been asking for as well. It had been expected, certainly. And as you say, we had heard previously that Yamagami had admitted to his crime. He had admitted it on the first day of his trial in October of last year. He said that everything is true. There is no doubt I did this. He had killed, he shot and killed former Prime Minister Shinzo Abe as he was delivering a campaign speech with a homemade gun. But there's been a huge amount of public attention. There were big queues outside the court in Nara today. The sentencing is something that has divided public opinion in Japan. A lot of people feel he is a cold-blooded murderer. There's also a lot of people that sympathize with him and feel that he's a man who had an unfortunate upbringing and that he is a man who is a victim of religious abuse. His mother was a devoted follower of the Unification Church and had bankrupted her family as a result. Reports say that she donated hundreds of thousands of dollars to the Unification Church. It has now been disbanded. A court ordered it to do so and said that it violated the laws governing religious groups in Japan. This case also exposed deep links between the church and members of Japan's ruling Liberal Democratic Party. And as a result, several cabinet members had to resign.
