Israeli authorities demolished most of the UNRWA headquarters in occupied East Jerusalem within a few hours, giving staff only minutes to evacuate. The UN Relief Agency for Palestinian Refugees (UNRWA), which provides humanitarian services to millions, condemned the action as a violation of international law and the UN Charter.

The demolition was celebrated by some Israeli bystanders and praised by National Security Minister Itamar Ben-Gavir, who accused UNRWA of supporting terrorism, a claim the agency strongly denies. UNRWA Commissioner General Philip Lazzarini called the demolition an unprecedented attack and said it was an effort to erase Palestinian refugee identity.

Israel demolishes UNRWA headquarters in Jerusalem

It only took a few hours for Israeli authorities to tear down most of UNRWA's headquarters in occupied East Jerusalem. A security guard, who spoke to DW on condition of anonymity, was on site when the bulldozers arrived. The police and the special forces came, as you can see. After that, we saw bulldozers starting to arrive and beginning to destroy the buildings. They told us, you have five minutes to get out. If you refuse, you will be detained. So go now. The UN Relief Agency for Palestinian Refugees provides humanitarian services to millions of people across the region. UNRWA says this demolition is a violation of international law. And what we saw today is the culmination of two years of incitement and measures against UNRWA in East Jerusalem in violation of the Charter of the United Nations and in violation of the privileges and immunities of UNRWA as a UN body. These Israeli bystanders are celebrating the demolition, heckling local Palestinian and international journalists who are trying to report on the destruction, DW included. They accuse the UN body of being an arm of the Palestinian militant group Hamas. UNRWA strongly denies this. An organisation that teaches how to kill Jews and was taking an active role on the 7th of October, they need to find another solution because this organisation cannot continue to remain in the society of this area. Since the Hamas-led attack on October 7th, 2023, the Israeli government has sought to ban UNRWA from operating not just on Israeli territory, but also in occupied East Jerusalem, the West Bank and Gaza. Far-right National Security Minister Itamar Ben-Gavir was full of praise for the compound's destruction when he visited the site. And today these terror supporters are being removed from here along with everything they built here. This is what will be done to every supporter of terrorism in Jerusalem. UNRWA Commissioner General Philip Lazzarini released a statement condemning what he calls an unprecedented attack. He says it is one further step taken by Israeli authorities to erase the Palestinian refugee identity.
