Han received a 23-year prison sentence, exceeding the prosecution's request, after being convicted of abetting the declaration, lying under oath, and ordering the destruction of evidence.

The court's decision marks the first verdict among officials tried over the incident, with the judge describing the act as a 'self-coup' that undermined democracy. The verdict is expected to influence the upcoming case of former President Yoon Suk-yol, whose final verdict is scheduled for February 19.

South Korea's former Prime Minister has been found guilty of engaging in the key action of insurrection for his role in a failed declaration of martial law in 2024. Han Deok-seo was indicted for failing to prevent and abetting Yoon's martial law declaration. It follows the guilty verdict and sentencing of former President Yoon Suk-yol, who's been given five years in prison so far. Well, Jack Barton joins us live now from Seoul. Jack, so just talk us through this verdict and the importance of this case. Well, we've reached the end of the verdict now. And what is a very important case because former acting President Han Deok-seo is the first official to face a verdict on charges directly related to the act of martial law. That is the declaration made by former President Yoon Suk-yol, who's since been impeached back in December 2024 at various officials on trial. This is the first verdict and 23 years he has received. That is higher than the 15 that the prosecution was asking for. He's been found guilty of all the major charges, including lying under oath, helping organize a cabinet meeting that was made to look normal, but was in fact a cabinet meeting preparing for the rolling out of martial law and for also ordering the destruction of key evidence, which was a revision of the martial law draft that was supposed to be watered down after it failed. So a much stronger sentence than the prosecution had asked for. The judge also ruling that the declaration did amount to insurrection. There was a lot of doubt over whether that would occur, but the judges said yes. Insurrection here defined as either a riot to undermine the constitution or an act to overthrow a government. The judge saying this was a self coup. This was the president declaring a coup against his own government in order to try to stay in power. And he said it has shaken the very foundations of democracy here. So a strong sentence and very strong language from the judge. Yeah, Jack, and how does this case then relate to the verdict for former President Yoon Suk-yol, which is due on February 19, I think? There's no doubt now that it has a very strong bearing on that case, even though they're very different. Han Duk-soo, of course, still proclaims his innocence as he had nothing to do with it, says he opposed martial law. In the case of the impeached former president, it's very clear that if he wasn't the mastermind, at least he had a very central role. It was Yoon that came out and made the declaration on television on that night. So, you know, it's very clear. And the judge has now said this does amount to insurrection in South Korea that can either carry a death penalty or a potential life in prison. The prosecution is calling for the death penalty, even though that hasn't been carried out in decades here in South Korea. But it's very clear now the court is prepared to take a tough stance in the case of Han Duk-soo, a tougher stance than the prosecution was asking for. We'll have to wait and see whether he goes along with the death sentence, but it certainly doesn't bode well for former President Yoon. When his final verdict comes up, it is expected on February 19.
