A source close with Macron has described the message as authentic, but it begs the question, why did Trump publish it if they are indeed friends? As the once ironclad relationship between the EU and the United States has grown rocky, Macron has sought to hold ground, saying international order is at risk. The US is an established power, but it's turning away from its allies and walking away from international rules it was just recently promoting. The French president has also hit back at Trump's mission to take over Greenland, saying recently no intimidation nor threat will influence us, and that tariff threats are unacceptable. Trump in turn has taken to softly mocking Macron. And I said, Emmanuel, yes, thank you so much for calling. He also offered a harsh rebuke to Macron's decision to reject his invitation to join the so-called Board of Peace. Did he say that? Well, nobody wants him because he's going to be out of office very soon, so, you know, that's all right. To conjole him, however, the US president then promised a 200% tariff on French wines and champagnes. A humiliation, threat and sign Trump still wants Macron to be involved.
