Why does Trump want Greenland, and what could it mean for Europe?

After the U.S. raid on Venezuela that resulted in the arrest of President Nicolás Maduro, Trump repeated his intentions to annex Greenland for the U.S. We need Greenland from the standpoint of national security. Trump regularly cites national security interests as a reason for his intentions towards Greenland. But according to this expert, Washington already has a security foothold in Greenland, and the Trump administration's intentions almost certainly pertain more to natural resources. The president puts a lot of emphasis on resources, mineral resources, energy resources, commercial opportunities. You know, we can debate how easily these would be realized in Greenland. Investors have so far not been that keen to be involved. But clearly, this is part of President Trump's worldview. While the Danish government insists that the territory is not for sale, Lesseur says Denmark and Europe have some cards to play as well. I do think there are a lot of things on the table because the administration does seem to put a primacy on economic and commercial issues, among other things. I think there is the possibility to do, in some sense, a package deal across the Atlantic in which many things are in play. The U.S. and Denmark are both founding members of NATO. Nevertheless, Lesseur warns that the constant threats are disruptive of a transatlantic security relationship that's already in jeopardy.
