It seems like every few weeks, there's new dramatic flooding video out of Ruidoso, New Mexico. AccuWeather's Geoff Cornish explains why.

Ruidoso, New Mexico, has experienced repeated flash flooding, with dramatic footage showing a mobile home being swept away after another round of monsoon rainfall. This follows a deadly flood event less than three weeks earlier that resulted in three fatalities in the community.

The persistent flood risk is attributed to a 17,000-acre burn scar left by a wildfire in the mountains near Ruidoso. The lack of vegetation on the burn scar increases the likelihood of flash floods, and experts expect this elevated risk to continue for two to five years until the area’s vegetation is restored.

Why do floods keep washing away homes in Ruidoso?

BUT ALL THIS IS GOING TO BE HAPPENING AGAIN AND AGAIN OVER THE NEXT COUPLE OF YEARS IN THIS AREA BECAUSE THERE IS A LARGE, ABOUT A 17,000 ACRE BURN SCARP UP THE MOUNTAINS THERE IN RUIDOSO AND POINTS WEST FROM JUNE OF LAST YEAR. SO UNTIL THE VEGETATION RETURNS, WE'RE GOING TO CONTINUE TO SEE FLASH FLOOD RISK THERE VERY HIGH IN RUIDOSO FOR THE NEXT TWO TO FIVE YEARS. AND THEN AFTER WE GET TO THAT POINT, THE VEGETATION SHOULD BE RESTORED AT LEAST ON THE MOST PART, AT LEAST LOW LEVEL VEGETATION. TONIGHT MOST OF US WILL HAVE A CLEAR SKY. NOW THIS IS, AGAIN, GOING TO BE A VERY WARM ONE OUT THERE FOR SOME. BUT YOU CAN SEE WE'VE BEEN DEALING WITH TEMPERATURES AROUND 102. BUT TONIGHT WE'RE GOING TO CLEAR BACK OUT.
