The White House has unveiled a broad AI policy blueprint under President Donald Trump, aimed at reshaping how the United States builds, governs and exports artificial intelligence.

The White House is advancing a plan to accelerate the deployment of new data centers essential for artificial intelligence by reducing environmental requirements, a measure supported by Silicon Valley companies such as Google. These data centers are expected to significantly increase electricity and water consumption, with most of the energy likely sourced from fossil fuels, particularly natural gas, due to current U.S. infrastructure.

The initiative has sparked concerns about environmental impacts and potential increases in utility bills for American citizens. In response, around a hundred organizations, including unions and environmental advocates, have called for a popular action plan for AI, urging the implementation of safeguards to address the possible risks and abuses associated with the rapid expansion of this technology.

The first part of Donald Trump's plan enable the rapid deployment of new data centers which are essential for the functioning of artificial intelligence. To facilitate the granting of building permits the White House wants to reduce environmental requirements which is a request of Silicon Valley companies such as Google. Once built these data centers will have huge energy needs. Data centers are a growing portion of the electricity use in the U.S. It's power generation always has environmental impacts but most of our existing power plants are still producing electricity via fossil fuels and most often that's natural gas if we need a new power source quickly. This reality has been exacerbated by Donald Trump who already wants to increase oil and gas production which is abundant in the United States. Beyond hydrocarbons these data centers will consume another critical resource water. These GPUs generate answers and draw power in doing so they also generate heat which means they need we need water to to cool those processes down to keep the machine room temperatures and a nice stable temperature. Another consequence of this massive use of water and electricity is that American citizens could see their bills increase. Faced with these potential risks around a hundred organizations unions associations and environmental justice advocates have signed a text calling for a popular action plan for AI which demands safeguards be put in place against the possible abuses of this technology.
