A recent survey has found that over 6% of people aged 16 or older in the European Union were unable to access dental care, with financial constraints, long waiting times, and distance from providers cited as the main barriers. Greece, Latvia, and Romania reported the highest rates of unmet dental care needs, while Malta, Germany, and Croatia had the lowest. The survey also revealed that individuals at risk of poverty experienced significantly higher rates of unmet dental care needs compared to those not at risk, with the largest disparities observed in Romania and Greece. These findings highlight ongoing inequalities in dental care access across the EU.

The disparity was observed across all EU countries. The most significant differences were observed in Romania with a gap of 30.9 percentage points and in Greece with a gap of 30.1 percentage points. Large differences were also observed in Latvia and Portugal. On the other hand, Germany, Malta and Poland had the smallest gaps between the rates of unmet dental care needs for those at risk of poverty compared to those not at risk.
