A recent survey indicates that around 11% of European Union citizens are considering leaving their current region within the next five years. The highest proportions of potential movers are found in Portugal and Hungary, each with 16%, followed by France, Greece, and Poland. 

The primary motivations for relocation include limited job opportunities, lack of trust in the political environment, and unaffordable quality housing. High housing costs are a significant barrier for 64% of potential buyers, with 40% unable to save for a deposit, especially in the Czech Republic and Greece. Conversely, residents in the Netherlands and Croatia are the least likely to consider moving by choice.

Where in the EU do people most want to move away from?

Why do people move to different regions? Around 11% of EU citizens are planning to leave their region in the next 5 years. 7% want to move out of choice, 4% out of necessity. The highest percentages of people willing to leave were found in Portugal and Hungary, 16% each and 15% in France, followed by Greece and Poland. People who may leave, whether by choice or necessity, mainly do so because they can't find quality jobs or have limited economic opportunities. 23% however say they're pushed away by a lack of trust in the political environment in their region or country. 22% point to the lack of affordable quality housing, which remains one of the most pressing issues across the continent. According to the latest European Housing Trend Report, high housing costs are holding back 64% of potential buyers. Among them, 40% can't save up for a deposit, particularly in the Czech Republic and Greece. Meanwhile, the highest shares of respondents who ruled out moving anytime soon out of choice were found in the Netherlands and Croatia.
