Sometimes, winter doesn't wait until the end of fall. AccuWeather's Tony Laubach shows us several U.S. cities that typically receive early snow.

Several US cities are known to experience their first snowfalls as early as September, well before the official start of winter. Denver, Colorado, tops the list, having recorded measurable September snow multiple times, with the earliest on record occurring on September 3, 1961. Other cities with similar early snow histories include Billings, Montana; Salt Lake City, Utah; Rapid City, South Dakota; and Fargo, North Dakota, with Rapid City being the more frequent recipient in the Dakotas.

While September snow is not guaranteed annually in these locations, its occurrence serves as a reminder that seasonal transitions can be abrupt. Such early snow events have the potential to disrupt travel and daily routines, highlighting the variability of weather patterns in certain regions of the United States.

What U.S. cities typically see snow in September?

I am about to put the BRRR in September because some U.S. cities do not wait for winter to see their first snow. Denver Colorado tops the list. The Mile High City has seen September snow dozens of times since records began with its earliest measurable snow on September 3, 1961. Further north up I-25 is Billings, Montana, no stranger to early snow either with multiple September storms in its history. Further to the west in Salt Lake City, Utah, they've logged September snows thanks to its high elevation in nearby mountains. In the Dakotas, both Rapid City, South Dakota and Fargo, North Dakota have also seen September snowfalls, though Rapid City is the more frequent candidate. So while September snow isn't guaranteed for these cities, it's always a possibility proving that summer's end does not always mean a slow fade into fall and these early snows aren't just records.
