Meta, the parent company of Instagram, has introduced new safety measures aimed at protecting teens on its platform. Under the updated policy, accounts for users under 18 will be restricted to content similar to what is allowed in PG-13 rated movies, limiting exposure to mature or sensitive material such as explicit language, risky stunts, and adult content. These settings will be automatically applied to all teen accounts, with parents having the option to make them even more restrictive.

Instagram will use artificial intelligence to identify and filter inappropriate content and to detect users who may have misrepresented their age. The platform also allows parents to supervise their teen's interactions, providing insight into who their child is communicating with, including AI chatbots, though the content of conversations remains private. These measures are part of Meta's ongoing efforts to address parental concerns about online safety, unwanted contact, and age-appropriate content for teens.

What to know about Instagram's new teen safety rules

As concerns grow about the kinds of content kids and teens see on social media, the tech giant Meta says they are doing something about it. This morning, Meta, the parent company of Instagram, is out with a major announcement aimed at protecting teens online. Instagram's teen accounts will now allow content similar to what is allowed in a movie with a PG-13 rating. Under the new policy, the settings for users under 18 will hide or limit more mature or sensitive content like swear words, risky stunts, and accounts that routinely post adult content. The platform will also block teen searches for a wide range of topics. Every teen account will be automatically opted in. Parents will have the ability to make these controls even more restrictive. Tara Hopkins is Instagram's global director of public policy and joins us now. Thank you so much. Thank you for having me. This is a big announcement and something I think a lot of parents have been waiting for. It starts to roll out today here in the U.S. Tell us exactly how these new features will work. So taking a bit of a step back, this time last year we launched teen accounts on Instagram. It was one of our most significant changes to the experience that teens have on Instagram. It was answering the three things that parents were most concerned about, they told us they were most concerned about. So it was about unwanted contact, no parents want to think that their teen can be contacted by someone they don't know, the amount of time they're spending on the app, and inappropriate content. So making sure they weren't showing content to teens that wasn't appropriate for their age. Parents want to know exactly what does that mean because it's quite complex when we talk about what is age gauging, what is inappropriate content. So really what we wanted to do was speak the language of parents and parents really know and understand movie rating standards. That's what we've all grown up with as parents of a certain age. So what we did was we revamped Instagram teen accounts to be guided by the PG-13 experience that most parents out there would understand probably better than some of the words that we would use at a tech company like Meta. So how does Instagram identify what's mature sensitive content? Do you use artificial intelligence or is there an actual person looking at this stuff? We do. So first of all we did a comprehensive review of all of our guidelines around what we do and don't allow for a teen to see when they're using Instagram. Then when we made some changes, then what we do is we train artificial intelligence to be able to find and remove the kind of content that a teen shouldn't see or make sure that they're not seeing content that would be inappropriate for a teen. So we use AI to do that. We also use AI to be able to find teens that may have not told us their truth about their age because this is really important for us. We really want to know who is a teen on our platform because when we know who is a teen on our platform we're able to give them the right kind of experience because we know they're a teen. How can AI know if a teen lied about their age? So it's a great question. So AI is very enhanced in this space. We started to do this last year on Instagram where we look for certain signals and signs that maybe the teen isn't the age they told us they were. So for instance we look at who's the teen following. We're looking at maybe the teens all of their friends are wishing them a happy 16th birthday but their date of birth on Instagram is actually that they're 22. I like that. So with this setting you allow parents to see who their kids are talking to but not the actual conversation. And these days teens could be having conversations with AI chatbots. Why not allow that for transparency or worse? So what we've done here is we actually do allow for parents to even further limit the content that their teen can see which is another announcement that we're making today which is new. So every teen under the age of 18 will be defaulted into this guided by PG-13 experience. So if all the parents out there just know that starting today they will be moved automatically into this experience. If a parent wants to go that step further they can. They can even further limit the content which is kind of throwing an even kind of wider protective net. We would encourage parents to set up supervision because in supervision you can actually get more insights into who your teen is talking to. So you can see if your teen has been having a conversation with an AI chatbot. You can see that in the supervision experience. So parents can't read the conversation. They can't read the conversation. No. And that's us trying to strike the right balance between it. Again speaking to parents. They said they want more insights into who their teen and not just AI. This is the accounts that their teens are speaking to who they're DMing who their direct messaging over the course of the last week. So we allow parents in the supervision experience to be able to have more insight. They can see who the teen is communicating with and hopefully then over the kitchen table or in the car on the way to football they can say hey I saw that you've been talking to this particular you've been engaging with this particular AI experience. I'd love to know why. What are you getting out of that. We do restrict the types of AI. It's a good step. It's a good first step. It'll be interesting to see down the line how you measure success.
