A recent Wall Street Journal report suggested that Tylenol use by pregnant women may be linked to autism in children, prompting significant public concern and a drop in shares for Tylenol's manufacturer, Kenview. However, the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services has called the report speculative, and Kenview maintains there is no causal link.

A large Swedish study tracking 2.5 million children over 25 years found no association between acetaminophen use during pregnancy and increased autism risk. The American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists also states there is no clear evidence proving a direct relationship between prudent acetaminophen use in pregnancy and fetal developmental issues. Authorities advise awaiting further evidence before drawing conclusions.

What the research says about Tylenol and autism

A story the Wall Street Journal is reporting is getting a lot of attention. The Journal says Health Secretary Robert F. The Department of Health and Human Services calls the Journal's report speculation. And the maker of Tylenol, Kenview, said it believes there is no causal link to autism. Still though, shares of Kenview plunged nearly 10 percent today. Dr. John LaPook is here, and John, you've been doing some reporting on this all afternoon. What are you learning? I spoke this afternoon to a researcher who was part of a major study published just last year that followed two and a half million children in Sweden over 25 years. He said use of acetaminophen, which is the active ingredient in Tylenol, during pregnancy was not associated with an increased risk of autism in children. In addition, we reached out to the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists, and this is what they told us. They said there is no clear evidence that proves a direct relationship between the prudent use of acetaminophen during pregnancy and fetal developmental issues. So John, people out there are still wondering, ah, what do I do? What do they do? HHS has called the Wall Street Journal report speculation, and I think we have to take them at their word.
