Russian media refers to it as the gateway to Donetsk, and the Russian military now claims to have captured it. The city of Pokrovsk in the east has become a focal point in Russia's campaign, with these images purporting to show attacks on a neighbouring town. If confirmed, the capture would be the most important Russian territorial gain of the year. Pokrovsk is an important city. They haven't had, you know, too many important successes, I'd say, for key cities, but this would be an important success in 2025, and so it's quite important for them informationally to capture the city, I think, before the end of the year. You know, Russia has advanced probably about twice the rate in 2025 as it did in 2024, but in many cases they're advancing in somewhat less important directions. Ukraine rejects Russia's claim, saying its troops are holding onto the city despite difficult conditions. Kiev has deployed special forces there to push back on what it calls an intense Russian assault. 20 percent of Russia's artillery goes to Pokrovsk, so you can understand how difficult it is for us. Up to 300 Russian troops are in the city. Our 425th assault regiment is working inside Pokrovsk, and is engaged in quite intense combat operations. Another focus for Russia, Ukraine's power grid, as the days get darker and colder. Kiev's national energy operator says several regions faced rolling power cuts on Sunday as a result of targeted Russian attacks, like one in Zaporizhia, where 58,000 homes were plunged into darkness. Facing a fourth winter of blackouts, millions of Ukrainians are preparing for hardship, their president warning that Vladimir Putin is orchestrating a humanitarian disaster.
