CBS News' Kris Van Cleave explains what officials will focus on as they investigate the deadly UPS cargo plane crash, including video of the plane on the runway and locating the black boxes.

Following a deadly UPS plane crash in Louisville, Kentucky, investigators are analyzing eyewitness videos and images to determine the sequence of events leading up to the disaster. Particular attention is being paid to footage showing the left wing engine on fire and the subsequent detachment of the engine from the aircraft.

Authorities are also working to recover the plane's black boxes, which may have been compromised by an intense and prolonged fire fueled by more than 250,000 pounds of jet fuel. The investigation aims to understand the cause of the engine failure and assess whether critical flight data can be retrieved.

What investigators will be looking for in the deadly UPS plane crash

For more on this, let's turn to senior transportation correspondent Chris Van Cleve. Chris, good morning. There are lots of eyewitness videos for investigators. What will they be looking for? Well, good morning, Nate. They're going to pour over all of these images of what led up to this disaster, but I think of particular interest is going to be the video of this plane on the runway. If you take a look, you can see the area where the engine on the left wing should be is on fire. It appears the wing is on fire. If you look real closely, as the plane appears to start to try to leave the ground, there is flame coming out of the back of the second engine. If you're talking about a situation where the plane lost two of its three engines, it likely wouldn't be able to generate enough lift to fly. They're going to want to understand that sequence of events. There's also an image that appears to show that engine off the left wing laying on the ground to the side of the runway, meaning the engine actually detached from the airplane. And you can see from helicopter video parts of the engine on the tarmac there around the runway. They're going to want to understand why that engine detached, why it literally came off the airplane. That can create a host of problems, including the being able to balance the airplane if you were able to get it off the ground. Obviously, that engine shouldn't have come apart like that. One of the big things investigators are going to need to do is try to track down the black boxes. They look like this. This is a flight data recorder. They are designed to withstand the impact in about 30 minutes of fire. But there was so much fuel on this airplane, more than 250,000 pounds of fuel, 38,000 gallons of fuel, roughly, for this flight to Hawaii. That fire burned so long and so hot, this might not be recoverable. All right, Chris, thank you.
