A 32-year-old man suspected of carrying out a bloody stabbing on a United Kingdom train is facing at least 10 criminal charges. CBS News' Ramy Inocencio has the latest.

A British national, Anthony Williams, 32, has been charged with 10 counts of attempted murder following a stabbing incident on a train to London. The attack, which occurred over the weekend, resulted in five people being hospitalized, including a crew member who is in critical but stable condition after reportedly intervening to stop the attacker.

Authorities responded quickly, arresting the suspect after an emergency stop. The incident has led to heightened police presence at train stations across the UK. Officials are investigating the motive, while recent data shows knife crime has been a growing concern in the country, although there has been a slight decrease in the past year.

our attention to the UK now where a man suspected of stabbing multiple people on a train to London over the weekend has been charged with 10 counts of attempted murder this morning. CBS News foreign correspondent Rami Innocencio joins us from outside London's King Cross station and so many people take these trains there in the London area. Rami, what's the latest? Harold, yes good morning to you there. This is where that train was supposed to arrive but never did. London's King Cross station here, one of the capital's busiest rail hubs and we're seeing an increased police presence just behind me. Police officers in yellow high-vis jackets and this is what Britain's transport minister said to expect at train stations across the country with officers, police dogs on patrol and just a few hours ago that suspect, a British national, his name Anthony Williams, 32 years old, was charged with those 10 counts of attempted murder. One passenger on that train on Saturday night said that he first thought it was some kind of post Halloween scare and then he realized it was actually a real-life horror story that he was in himself. Another said that a group of about 10 passengers barricaded themselves inside the cafe car like sardines hoping that they wouldn't be found. They said that they saw a man wielding what they called a very large kitchen knife. The train then made an emergency unscheduled stop. Police arrived within several minutes. He was tased then arrested. Five people are still in the hospital but one of them is a member of the crew now being called a hero that he saved people's lives as he tried to stop the attacker. This morning he's in critical but stable condition and they're trying to figure out truly the motive for all that happened on Saturday night. Yeah and Rami, I think what makes a stabbing attack so alarming is that it requires so much intent, so much effort to purposefully cut other people. Are these types of things relatively that common in the UK? Well you know compared to the United States where we know gun crime and death from firearms often too often grab the headlines, here it is much much more knife crime Errol and since for example the pandemic to last year it has risen from something like 40,000 cases each year for England and west of us to Wales to more than 50,000 cases each year and this has followed you know concerns about money, the cost of living along with some aspects potentially of mental health and this is something officials are likely looking into for this past weekend's attack. There's also a government study that more children are carrying knives for protection. There's some positive news though that knife crimes have fallen in the past year but still again looking this has been a prevalence that has been rising over the past five to six years.
