Just weeks before the start of the school year, severe flooding gutted Hadfield Elementary’s 4K classrooms, forcing teachers to salvage what they could and delaying the first day of school for four-year-olds.

Teachers at Hadfield School in Waukesha are rebuilding their 4K classrooms after severe flooding destroyed most of their supplies and materials. Only about one-third of the classroom items could be salvaged, prompting a community-wide effort to support the teachers through donations and assistance.

The start of the 4K school year was postponed to allow time for repairs and replacements. Despite the setback, teachers and staff expressed gratitude for the strong community support and remain committed to providing a positive first school experience for their young students.

The first day of school can be hard enough without flooding, but that's what happened here at Hadfield School in Waukesha. I'm your Waukesha County reporter Kaylee Starrl, and with a start to 4K now pushed back, I met with the principal and a 4K teacher to talk about how they're rebuilding. Sorting through what's left. All this is mine. I forgot I got this. Not how cool they feel. Expected to spend the days leading up to a new school year. This is all of the stuff that was saved. It's only about 1 3rd of what was in their 4K classrooms at Hadfield School. Our principal texted us and said there was water in our classrooms. They were going to look into it and that they'd let us know. After Wisconsin's historic flooding, Hadfield's principal came to see the aftermath for himself. Everything had to go 10 inches of rain destroyed the classroom. Just weeks until the first day they got to work removing everything down to the floor. But knowing that it's a 4K room with four year olds in their first experience ever in school and how important it is for them to have routines and established items in their room and things that they can use. I knew it was going to take a lot of work, but and I need to do that whole and that work that he says everyone has stepped up to do from rebuilding to replacing like interactive books from community, family, friends, PTO, donations to wish list and the school mean these teachers can start to replace what was lost. But a lot of it as like a lot of teachers know comes out of our own pocket so. Yeah, we've been. We've been very grateful for the support we've had. We've had a lot, a lot, a lot of support from our community and while four keys first day was pushed back one week to allow time for final fixes that we need in terms of like flood stuff, they can't wait to be back in the classroom. Yeah, I love the challenge. I love the people I work with. The staff that work in this building is like second to none. And I just love to be.
