Summer is trying to make a comeback across the Midwest and Great Lakes by the end of the week. Look for highs in the 60s in Minneapolis, 70s in Chicago and Cincinnati and 80s in Kansas City and St. Louis. Temperatures will peak Thursday and Friday before cooler weather arrives this weekend.

Warmer air is moving northward across the Midwest, resulting in significant temperature increases in several cities. Minneapolis is currently cooler at 55 degrees, while Des Moines and Kansas City are experiencing much warmer conditions, with Kansas City reaching 85 degrees. 

This warm boundary is expected to shift eastward, causing cities like Chicago and Detroit to see higher temperatures. For example, Chicago's temperature is forecast to rise from 67 to 74 degrees. Such warmth is unusual for this time of year in the region, particularly for cities like Chicago, Detroit, and Indianapolis.

Warmer weather to spread across Midwest

Now look at the temperatures today. Minneapolis 55 Des Moines 76. You get 20 degrees warmer and then Kansas City get 10 degrees warmer than that 85. So obviously we've got a boundary sitting here and if you're north of that, it's kind of nice South of that. It's warm. The warmer temperatures surge a little bit to the north and so that's one of the reasons why you'll see an increase and then. It shifts eastward, so as that happens, places like Chicago will warm up. Detroit will warm up. See if Chicago goes from 67 tomorrow up to 74 on Friday, and so you can really see that warmth kind of expanding a little bit. With temperatures going up and down. And like I said, we're kind of getting to that time of year where we don't really see too many 80 degree numbers for areas around Chicago, Detroit, or even Indianapolis.
